Late last year Manurewa High School and Rongomai Primary conducted a survey among its students to gain an understanding regarding the amount of mould in their homes. Mould is an indicator of an unhealthy home.
The results were astounding. 14 different types of mould were discovered in the students’ homes and most had the right humidity and temperature to produce moulds in a form that was likely to cause harm to humans. This study was prompted by the death of a 2 year old in her Otara home that the coroner linked to damp living conditions.
The story was reported by Radio NZ and is both interesting and worrying. It should be compulsory reading for anyone in a home that has weeping windows or is uncomfortably cold in winter.
